William James Carlton is considered as one of the first advertising guys. In 1864, he started selling advertising space in religious magazines. In 1868, Carlton hired a young guy named Thompson. A few years later, Thompson bought the agency for $500 and renamed it. Today, the agency is known as J. Walter Thompson*. It is rumored that Thompson paid more bucks for the furniture as for the agency. However, William James Carlton can be seen as the first of those infamous Mad Men Of The World ...
